who are these guys

...Killer grooves? Funk that make you want to get up and move your body? Musical left-turns that surprise and energize your brain? If you're sitting there nodding your head then you're our kind of people. (If you are looking at this quizzically like a dog that just heard a wierd noise, well..you still need to give it a listen!)

The Odd Get Even is a collaboration between keyboardist Bill Cornish and drummer Bill Ray. The songs started out as improvised drum tracks by Ray around which Cornish fleshed out the details and provided a compositional framework. The result is an energetic and unique blend of styles full of creative twists and turns. Better than your favorite energy drink (and without the crash).

Think Weather Report meets Garaj Mahal. Or Headhunters-era Herbie Hancock. Or maybe vintage Jeff Beck (well, okay, without the guitars).

So the story goes like this. Oh hi, Bill Ray here just spending a few moments typing in strings of text longer than the preformatted 140 character limit (the literary version of 4/4)...anyhow...

So I was recording with this guy in Spotless Digital in Ocean Beach, CA. back around October of 2008 and there were a few moments left on the clock. I asked if it would be OK to do a little bit of drum solo action and record the bits for my website, a little "Hey check me out" thing. As I got going, the thing I was playing turned out to be a song in my head. No real melody, just a "tuneless whistle" that continued in a seemingly chaotic way that ended up being the impetus for so many musical things.

So the first track I did turned out to be "Esperanto" off the first OGE album. It also became many other things by many other people! (But that's a different story...website...whatever!

So Mr. Cornish (mi compadre de musica) set about and turned my snarky little drum solos into full-blown productions. I'll defer to him in writing from here on out, so feel free to edit what I've done, Mr. C. :D
